The Newcastle Knights has signed forward Mitch Barnett and outside back Brendan Elliot, both to contracts for this season and 2017.

“Mitch and Brendan are both young players who immediately improve our squad,” coach Nathan Brown said.

22-year-old Barnett is an edge back-rower who has played two NRL games and won the NSW Cup Player of the Year in 2015. He returns to the Knights after playing in the lower grades before linking with the Canberra Raiders in 2013.

“Mitch is an edge player, which is important. He is willing, he’s aggressive and a very good line runner,” Brown said.

“He has been unlucky to not play more games but he’s been behind some very good players at Canberra.

“He was wanted by a number of clubs so it is pleasing he is returning to the Knights.”

Elliot moves to the Knights from the Sydney Roosters, and at 22-years of age, he has played 14 NRL games.

“Brendan is a very good technical player and has been at a Club playing with good players and within a good system,” Brown said.

“He is defensively solid and he is only going to improve getting regular game time.”

Barnett and Elliot join the Club effective immediately after their respective Clubs granted them a release this week.

  1. Not that it really bothers me too much but does this mean Tariq Sims will be released to the Dragons?

I would like to see us sign Keary before June 30.
I suppose the chances of this happening are very slim.
    Cheers

    • Apparently Keary deal is off and Dragons are looking to resign Marshall for another year and going for someone for 2018. A lot of halves are off contract at the end of next year.

    • Don’t know about the back flip to the gold coast but he tried to leave the raiders earlier on some bad advice from his manager.
He was never cleared to go to another club until now.

  2. Brendan Elliott looks to be a good player, surprised roosters let him go? Has there been any more talk of Keary to the Dragons, longer this goes on the more unlikely i think.

  3. Good signings but knights need star players. Try sign Segyaro before the June 30 deadline.

  4. Good pick ups We need all the help we can get lol. So who are we getting for tariq sims ? Will Matthews, Jake Marketo or Joel Thompson

    • Mate your on the money- expect Jake Marketo at the Knight soon .Remember who mentioned Barnett & Elliot on this forum 2 weeks ago..

  5. Hope they flick off Robbie Rochow, Kade Snowden, Akuila Uate, James McManus, Jeremy Smith, Jack Stockwell, Jarrod Mullen, Tariq Sims, Tyler Randell and a few fringe players. That’s about half their cap free to sign a Fullback, a couple of outside backs, a star hooker and 3 or 4 quality forwards. Zak Hardaker, Jacob Gagan, James Segyaro, Luke Lewis, Shaun Lane, Sam Moa, Lloyd Perrett and Tyson Frizzell. They could sign all the players I listed with the money freed up by releasing all these over paid players.

    1. Zak Hardaker
    2. Sione Matautia
    3. Dane Gagai
    4. Nathan Ross
    5. Brendon Elliot
    6. Brock Lamb
    7. Trent Hodkinson
    8. Sam Moa
    9. James Segyaro
    10. Korbin Sims
    11. Luke Lewis
    12. Tyson Frizzel
    13. Sam Mataora

    14. Dany Levi
    15. Lloyd Perrett
    16. Shaun Lane
    17. Daniel Saifiti

  6. Why would Dragons let Frizzel go? He is signed until 2018 and one of their best! Not happening.

  7. Knights will get the spoon this year and next year as well, these signings wont make a difference
