They have transformed from the oldest roster in the NRL to the youngest in the space of three seasons.

Now the Newcastle Knights recognise that they need a senior pro, or two, to teach their struggling tyros how to win. And it is understood they have identified former Test forwards Greg Bird (Gold Coast) and Luke Lewis (Cronulla) as priority recruitment targets.

Sources have told the Herald that Bird is top of Newcastle’s wish list, the only problem being that the Maitland-born matchwinner is under contract to Gold Coast for another season.

Lewis is off contract and the Knights appear to be his next option if the Sharks are unable to re-sign him.

Knights CEO Matt Gidley was reluctant to discuss individuals but confirmed the club was shopping for experienced forwards.
