The ripple effect of Russell Packer’s likely move to the St George Illawarra Dragons is tipped to help the Newcastle Knights sign a replacement for the controversial front-rower.

Sacked by the Knights in January after he was jailed for a brutal assault, Packer is eligible for parole in January and appears intent on resurrecting his career at the Dragons, despite offers from Newcastle, Brisbane and Penrith.

But to accommodate the former Kiwi international, the Dragons need to free up funds under their salary cap, and one player they are keen to offload is young prop Jack Stockwell.

Stockwell is under contract for next season, but Dragons officials have given him permission to negotiate with rival clubs, and it is understood Newcastle and Manly are vying for his services.
