Newcastle Knights chief executive Matt Gidley says the best is yet to come from star signing Trent Hodkinson when he is reunited with Jarrod Mullen in the halves.
Mullen is on track to return from a hamstring injury on Sunday week at home against the Storm, and Gidley said he was focusing on the club’s first-choice halves being back on the field together rather than entertaining speculation about Hodkinson’s future in Newcastle.
St George Illawarra are reportedly keen on signing the 27-year-old, who is in the first season of a three-year deal at the Knights, to replace veteran halfback Benji Marshall from 2017 onwards.
Dragons fullback Josh Dugan told News Ltd last weekend that Hodkinson was “definitely a fit replacement” if St George Illawarra did not re-sign Marshall. But Gidley said releasing Hodkinson was not on the table.
