Willie Mason’s NRL career may not yet be over, with claims he’ll be thrown a lifeline by the Newcastle Knights.
Sydney’s Daily Telegraph has reported Mason is on the verge of signing a deal for $40,000 plus match payments, to beef up the Knights forward pack.
It was suggested the controversial former Test forward only needs to pass a medical test on Tuesday – but that’s been denied by the club and Mason’s manager, Sam Ayoub.
The Knights say they have no comment, and Ayoub says he has not had any direct contact with Wayne Bennett.
The response from the Knights and Ayoub are at odds with reports that Mason is due in Newcastle to complete the deal on Tuesday, in the final step to an unlikely return to the NRL.
