Promising Melbourne Storm five-eighth Ben Hampton has agreed to a deal with the Cronulla Sharks – only to want out days later.
Hampton came to terms before Todd Carney’s infamous ‘bubbler’ photo and coach Peter Sharp’s decision to quit – and now has cold feet.
The North Queensland Cowboys have weighed in with an offer and Hampton wants to exercise a ‘cooling off’ clause in the contract.
But the cooling off clause only allows a player to renege and remain with his current club – not switch to a different club.
The Storm want to keep Hampton but are under massive salary cap pressure and can’t match the money on offer from rival clubs.
