The St George Illawarra Dragons have announced that Tariq Sims has agreed to terms on a three-year contract that will see him join the Club next season, until at least the end of 2019.

The local Gerringong Lions junior, who can play up front and in the second-row, is presently under contract to the Newcastle Knights and has played 97 NRL games to date.

Sims, 26, made his first-grade debut for the North Queensland Cowboys during the 2011 campaign and spent four seasons at the Townsville-based club prior to joining the Knights in 2015.

The former Junior Kangaroo has represented the Fiji Bati on five occasions and has been selected in the past five consecutive NSW Country Origin teams (2012-16).

Sims will join the Dragons in November.

  1. Not sure why as I would’ve thought a playmaker would’ve been the first priority signing with this coin.
Probably means Thompson will be moving on. Can’t say I agree with this as I reckon Joel has been great for us.

    • There are 2 dirt-bag players that stand out from the crowd. Joel Thompson with his facials, elbows, swinging arms and high shots. And BJ Leilua (enough said).

BJ is the worse of the 2 but Joel is close. He’s the ultimate antagonist and cheap shot merchant. I believe he was also the guy that bloodied Blake Austin’s nose then told the ref that he was milking (?). Either way Tariq Sims can do the same or better job then Joel.

        • The guy that cheers when players get knocked out. Or stand over hurt players and acts like a big man on campus. The guy that drops knees into players after a tackle. Yes that BJ Leilua.

Why else would the Roosters and Knights let a caliber of player like him go?

      • Must be new to the sport. Has never seen Tapau, Gal, Thaiday, Ennis, Bird, Myles, Blair, Smith (both Jeremy and Cameron) or Scott play.

      • When compiling your list please don’t forget to add Myles, Smith and Slater. The biggest dirt bag of them all was another Queenslander in Michael Crocker.

    • +1 I don’t see why the Dragons would get rid of Thompson. De Belin to the bench, I would say Creagh and maybe even Matthews or Cooper might be leaving.

  2. Leaving a team when you are co-captain midseason is pretty selfish. He was ok at cowboys but you have to remember he was running off the 9th immortal, which made him look better than he is.

  3. i think this means Creagh &/or Thompson are gone, have some good youngsters coming through as well in Host & Sele so hopefully they get a go and we didn’t pay too much for Sims

  4. who really cares hes just average besides the queens need all they can get .. still bottom place tipped ..believe that

    • “Still bottom placed tip”, how about you put your money where your mouth is?

50 years coming up for the Sharks with sweet bugger all to show for it. Believe that.

  5. Creagh, Thompson, de Belin, Cooper all have been ordinary so far this season. Biggest disappointment is probably Jack de Belin who hasn’t really developed much skill in the past couple of years. Although Trent Merrin wouldn’t strike fear into your office tea lady, he is a creative ball player and the Dragons have certainly missed him in 2016.

And, oh yes, a quality half-back and a three quarter wouldn’t go astray.

I think the Dragons will be waiting until Bruce Gordon’s money kicks in down the track before they can start building into a force again.

  6. Dragons should have plenty of money now and potentially more for next year.
They had $400k for James Roberts which was not used.
Pete Matautia and Ikakihifo have left….probably saving about $300K this year.
Dylan Farrell likely to retire….another $300K.
Ben Creagh likely to retire for next season….$500K
Benji to be released or extended for less….$200K to $500K
    *All these numbers are estimates.
Dragons should be well in the running to pick up Hayne or at the very least Corey Norman.
Replace Rein with Segeyaro for similar money then buy another big front rower.
Definitely need a fast back (or two), an attacking half and another big hard running prop.

    • Your on the money there munger. Don’t be surprised to see a player you named retiring before the end the season.

Marshall won’t be at the club next season despite recent media reports indicating the club have re-opened negotiations.

Rein looks like being upgraded, much to my dissapointment.

Keary is still a big chance.

      • Not convinced Keary is the answer…hoping for Corey Norman or Adam Reynolds.
If it is Keary, should be an improvement.
I’m not completely off Marshall either, just not thrilled with the combination with Widdop and the style of play. Marshall needs to p[lay more for the team (a little like last year without trying to be an attacking weapon on his own).
But, the Dragons have two 5/8’s …..should try and land a genuine halfback if possible.
Maybe try a switch between Widdop and Marshall at some stage.
Rein is OK but needs to improve his passing and stop passing forward also.
Hope we can get Segeyaro though.
