De Gois choice: Hooker happy to sign contract with Newcastle

Knights hooker Isaac De Gois wants to stay and play in Newcastle.

He was linked last week to a possible return to Cronulla but the 26-year-old All Saints Liverpool junior is on the verge of signing a new three-year contract with Newcastle, though the deal is unlikely to be formalised until Knights members vote on Nathan Tinkler’s takeover proposal.

Captain Kurt Gidley, who is keen to commit for four more years, is in the same situation.

De Gois is all right with that process and is leaving negotiations to manager Darryl Mather, who has indicated the diminutive dummy-half wants to continue his career in Newcastle.

It was reported yesterday that Knights junior Michael Ennis, a player Tinkler wanted to lure back to Newcastle, was close to signing a three-year contract extension with Canterbury.

Ennis, the incumbent NSW No.9, was one of the players then coach Brian Smith considered as a replacement for departing captain Danny Buderus at the end of 2008 but preferred De Gois.

Rick Stone, who succeeded Smith with four rounds left in 2009, said De Gois had developed into a highly respected player and teammate.
