The Brisbane Broncos have confirmed that Darius Boyd's thumb requires surgery but say the exact recovery time won't be known until after the surgery.

Boyd has a fracture in his right thumb after playing his part in Queensland’s State of Origin victory on Wednesday night and will undergo surgery this afternoon.

The joint may require pinning, which will not be known until the surgeon begins the operation.

“Thumbs and fingers can be funny things,” said Broncos’ High Performance Manager Jeremy Hickmans this morning.

“A lot depends on the position and the type of fracture.

“Once the surgery is done we will have a better line on where the injury is at.

“We would expect it to be a period of four to six weeks of recovery, but we won’t know for sure until it is done.”
