Two years after originally chasing Storm utility Ben Hampton, the North Queensland Cowboys have finally got their man.

Hampton will join the Cowboys from 2017, although the terms of the deal are unknown.

The 24-year-old has been in Melbourne’s full-time NRL squad since 2012, making his debut in Round 15, 2013.

Hampton has played 18 times for the Storm this season, bringing his career tally to 34.

An official announcement of the deal is expected once both clubs complete their finals campaign for 2016.

  1. I believe Ben Hampton has been filling a 2nd row spot off the bench all season, however his utility value is mostly for the halves (especially around Origin time). With Blake Green also gone for next year does this leave the Storm a little light on in this department? (Surely Billy Slater is gone and but they are banking on him to come back in and have both him and Cameron Munster on the field at the same time wearing the #1 and #6)?

    • Second row and i think he has played a little bit of centre too. Im thinking Slater at 1 and Munster at 6, but if Slater retires we have Croft to come in (but i think he is too young and not NRL ready IMO) and Ryley Jacks from he Sunshine Coast Falcons in the Queensland Cup, would prefer him playing 6 over Croft. Wanted Nikorima to sign, but we didnt get him, but i wouldnt mind getting Nu Brown from the Sharks to play in the 6, or even Sam Williams from the Raiders or Isaac John from the Panthers (Bellamy could make him a star)

  2. I thought this was done ages ago? I read it in the Courier Mail in a story about the Cowboys trying to sign Jordan McLean from the Storm, and it stated that Ben Hampton had signed with the club. Anyway, good signing by the Cowboys, i liekd him and he would have been useful for us next year to play 6 with Green leaving. I guess its either Croft or even Munster could be a possibility maybe (if Slater plays one more year)

  3. Don’t understand why they sign him. Already have Morgan and Thurston the best halves pairing in the world and Granville at Hooker. Plus Ponga Ray Thompson Rory Kosjason as depth. Just don’t undertand when James Tamou leaving Matt Scott Scott Bolton and Ben Hannant all getting very old I thought a Prop would be the biggest target. Josh McGuire would have been nice but is going to Titans Joe Ofahunge could a look to the future and Paul Vaughan would have been a like for like replacement.
