Chris Houston
In demand from a few clubs

North Queensland Cowboys are one of ‘‘two or three’’ clubs chasing Chris Houston but the former Newcastle Knights forward wants to stay and play in Newcastle.

The Cowboys are believed to have room to fit Houston into their NRL salary cap because they have lost forwards Luke O’Donnell (Huddersfield), Willie Mason (Hull KR), Carl Webb (Eels), Steve Rapira (Warriors) and Antonio Kaufusi and Steve Southern to the Knights.

A long-term knee injury to off-season recruit Brent Tate will provide the Cowboys with further cap relief, putting them in a position to rival the estimated $200,000 a season the Knights are believed to have available for Houston.

The Knights have tabled a three-year offer to Houston, who had four drugs supply charges dismissed by Magistrate Elaine Truscott in Newcastle Local Court last Friday, and hope he agree to terms and rejoins the club by the end of the week.
