The Sydney Roosters are expected to step up talks to keep boom half Jackson Hastings at the club after securing the signature of NSW backrower Boyd Cordner for a further two seasons.

With Pearce absent as he undergoes rehabilitation overseas, Cordner’s experience and leadership is more valuable than ever. It also places more pressure on Hastings, the 20-year-old half earmarked to replace James Maloney at five-eighth.

Hastings could now go into the season as the club’s senior half given Pearce’s absence and teenager Jayden Nikorima expected to wear the No 7 jersey in his place.

The Roosters have opened contract talks with Hastings and he appears likely to stay, with a deal possible in coming weeks.
