Brett Finch is firming each day to return home in 2013, so it was inevitable to hear the big-spending Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs mentioned as a candidate. Friends of the veteran playmaker are adamant he wants to play in Sydney, ruling out interest from the Newcastle Knights and St George Illawarra Dragons.
Always his own man, Finch would also be reluctant to join the Dragons because his father Robert is the club’s football manager.
That leaves the Bulldogs and the South Sydney Rabbitohs as frontrunners to lure him from Wigan, where he played under Bunnies coach Michael Maguire last season.
Mail continues to favour Souths, but the sticking point could be an element of disappointment Finch felt over not joining Maguire at Redfern this year.
The Bulldogs are still yet to re-sign starting halfback Kris Keating, who is understood to be on the Warriors’ wish-list to replace Bondi-bound James Maloney.
