North Queensland co-captain Jonathan Thurston will not play in his side's clash with Parramatta tonight at 1300 Smiles Stadium.

Thurston was set to return from injury this evening after pulling up well from the captain's run yesterday.

However, he has now ruled himself out of the match after he felt tightness in his calf once again this afternoon.

His omission means utility John Asiata will come into the starting side.

Thurston's setback casts further doubt over his availability for the Kangaroos' ANZAC Test against New Zealand on May 7.

However, coach Mal Meninga has stated that the 34-year-old did not have to return this week in order to be picked for the Australian team.
