The Melbourne Storm will move to secure five-eighth Gareth Widdop on a long-term deal as the club starts positioning itself for the future just a week after winning the grand final.
Widdop has made himself a valuable cog in the Storm's attacking wheel since his debut early in 2010.
The 23-year-old England Test half is one of two internationals off contract for next season, the other being 22-year-old New Zealand winger Matt Duffie.
Winger Justin O'Neill, 21, is also off contract and, along with forwards Jesse Bromwich and Kevin Proctor, the club is building its next generation around them.
From that group, Widdop's signing is the most urgent as Storm expects him to attract a lot of interest from other clubs.
