Priority re-signing for Storm
The Melbourne Storm will move to secure five-eighth Gareth Widdop on a long-term deal as the club starts positioning itself for the future just a week after winning the grand final.
Widdop has made himself a valuable cog in the Storm’s attacking wheel since his debut early in 2010.
The 23-year-old England Test half is one of two internationals off contract for next season, the other being 22-year-old New Zealand winger Matt Duffie.
Winger Justin O’Neill, 21, is also off contract and, along with forwards Jesse Bromwich and Kevin Proctor, the club is building its next generation around them.
From that group, Widdop’s signing is the most urgent as Storm expects him to attract a lot of interest from other clubs.

if the dragqueens are serious they will sign widdop. they need a good half.
I dont understand why the storm signed brett finch when they want to keep widdop and have cronk and hinchcliffe as a utility
Finch came cheap and will be the back up halfback when Cronk is out for Origin and Test matches.
Yeah but i dont think finch is the type of person who can deal with just being a backup
Looks like more brown paper bags full of cash heading Widdop’s way.
He can stash them in the house that he was given in his other contract.
Dave ras, I hope that happens though that would mean doust actually doing something right..!
Keep Hating on all the other NRL clubs, its not going to get you anywhere.
IH8cheatingbullgrubs that’s original. Can’t you say anything else. Seriously man you have to let it go. Stop the pain
widdop will resign unless he feels threated by finch but widdop better runnin and tackiling finch is just better kickin game

Would love to see Widdop head to belmore to play alongside josh reynolds under Hasler and see the dogs let Keating and hodkinson go. Unfortunately I couldn’t see how they could afford him under the cap especially with Tolman, Pritchard, Eastwood, reynolds and others all off contract at the end of next year. Not to mention that Jackson and finuncane’s contracts will need to be upgraded.
Does Can’terbury have a salary cap?
Devout saint if you had read my first post correctly before shooting off your comment you would have read me say I would like to see widdop head to belmore and for the dogs to release Keating and hodgo but I couldn’t see how the dogs would be able to accomodate widdop under their cap given the calibre of bulldog players off contract at the end of next year and given finuncane and jackson’s contracts will need to be upgraded
I think that the broncos are the team who should sign widdop. Get rid of Norman, he is just a selfish player with no real play making skills. Wallace and widdop would be a pretty good halves pairing.
