Players wanted Tony Iro as coach
Matt Elliott has been appointed New Zealand Warriors coach – and will walk into a player mutiny.
Warriors players and former New Zealand champions were united yesterday in slamming the club’s decision to appoint Elliott over local favourite Tony Iro.
“It’s taken far too long,” said Taylor, who plays for New Zealand in tomorrow night’s Test against Australia in Townsville. “I feel sorry for Tony Iro. He is in limbo, just like the players, and he has family.
“The players all want Tony to be the coach. He has been there for seven years. The majority of our team are Toyota Cup players and Tony has brought us all through.
“I don’t understand why he doesn’t get a shot. He has been assistant coach of the Kiwis, assistant coach of the NRL side now for the last four years.
“They were saying (they wanted) a supercoach, a Bennett or Bellamy. I’m a player and whatever coach comes I’ve got to do my job.”
New Zealand’s legendary halfback, Gary Freeman, said: “It will be a tough place to walk into when the players want someone else.”

This latest development does not surprise me at all. Good luck the Warriors, as you’ll need it.
I bet you guys are all laughing over this change in coach
@Dane Kerr
I can’t speak for anyone else, but, no I’m certainly am not laughing.
im a mad warriors fan and all i can do is laugh in between getting shit from everyone who doesnt necessarily follow league! FFS
This is wrong everybody knows we want iro, give him a crack hes a great mentor man, come on.
I honestly thought that David Kidwell would get the job.
nice spelling bro.
I agree signing elliot as head coach is an odd move.
Players are there and paid to play football not concern themselves with the board or coach. The brotown attitude and soft work ethic that has dogged the club needs to be removed.
Players want iro board opted for elliot, whos in charge I ask you, do we possibly upset the playing group, will they listen to the coach, should clubs talk to their players about possible coaching replacements, it’s hard one that’s for sure though if the team fails its always the coach to get the chop not the players.. Good luck warriors
the warriors should treat their players as players/employees and tell them this is how the f*** its going to be if you dont like it go to england and hire a coach with the same mentality i.e ANDERSON/CLEARY or a clone or lovechild of them!!! FFS!!!!
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA STANDARD! If panthers players found it hard to play for him warriors boys will find it nearly impossible… BRING BACK ANDERSON!!!!!!!!
I think its somewhat interesting that the Warriors have come out and said after they were unsuccessfull in signing Bellamy (although in my opinion Bellamy was never going to break his contract with the storm) that they got their man in Elliot when media reports up until then implied that the Warriors were hell bent and looked odds on in getting a bellyache. Hmmm Elliot not last man standing. Your kidding Warriors
Elliott will be gone in 3 years. The Warriors will be crap again next year, make the 8 the year after and then be crap again. That is usually how Elliott’s coaching reigns end up.
