Three-year deal
The Newcastle Knights is pleased to announce the signing of New Zealand international Jeremy Smith on a three-year deal following his release from the Cronulla Sharks.
Smith joins the Knights after two years at Cronulla and looks forward to linking-up with his new team and once again being coached by Bennett.
“I’m very excited to be joining the Newcastle Knights and I’m really looking forward to playing in front of the Club’s Members and supporters,” Smith said.
Smith was released from the final year of a three-year contract at the Sharks for personal reasons.

I think Dougs line up will be closer to the mark. I think Houston will start though. Hes an 80 minute player. I would like to see Korbin Sims get a start but I dont think he will be a first choice. We still look a bit light in the front row though. I noticed Packer is unsigned for next year. Get on it Benny.
So now Bennett will have 11 players in his side who have at least played origin or for NZ and McKinnon and Gagai future rep players. Just like he always had when he coached Brisbane and similiar to when he coached Saints. A coach is only as good as the cattle he has to work with, but Hasler and Bellamy look to be exeptions to the rule.
Why did Bennett recommend Steve Price to Doust and recommend Des Hasler to Greenberg? Why didn’t he recommend Hasler to Doust? Was it because he wanted Price to make him look good as us going bad makes Bennett look good.
Since Bennett left Brisbane he has only poached 2 players from Brisbane Boyd and Gagai and they were both unwanted, Emmett isn’t even worth mentioning. But he has poached Boyd, Scott and McKinnon from Saints and Weyman is rumoured to be going there in 14 too, Cuthberson isn’t even worth mentioning either. Bennett has been extreamly respectful to Brisbane but very disrespectful to Saints. I am obvioulsy very pissed off with Bennett, I just wish that he would have taken Jamie Coward with him to Newcastle.

I know look at all the rep talent he had at the Dragons. Creagh, Weyman, Cooper, Scott, Nightingale, Morris, Gasnier, Boyd, Merrin, Costigan, Smith and more. 4 of them juniors. You dont win premierships without good recuiting.
Newcastle won’t do any good if the players aren’t getting paid. There is a Bank guarantee from Tinkler but that won’t last long. Wonder what Bennett will do when the funds dry up?

Fair Dinkum he had some great seasons with us including a premiership and i thought his family still lived in Wollongong but he signs with the Knights. Doust i blow the Dragons trumpet all the time on this forum and also with my mates but cmon are you and Young going to get serious soon and start buying some good quality players. I’d have JS back anyday, he adds structure to the front row – but, thats not the case and what we have now is what we have got for 2013 in STG… Im happy that Beale is coming, he might not be the best of the best buys but he’s pretty consistent. Price can only get better but he will have some hard decisions in the halves and 5/8 selections next year…. hope he has the guts to gamble on some of the younger guns.
Don’t underestimate Frizell as a signing. Will have a massive year for the dragons he ended this year as a big impact player of the bench, he would have played much more footy this year if we weren’t letting him go. Big shame he was squeezed out.
yeh i heard he’s pretty good….when i read about his signing i tried to get to see him in action on the replays but he didnt get much game time (as you say correctly). Anyways, you guy have your bases covered better than us on contract signings – but thats not a hard feat given our track record.
I don’t rate Beale what so ever. If he plays fullback I think he will be one of the worst fullbacks in the comp, maybe the worst fullback in the comp. I would not even want him on the wing and definently not at center either.
I am however very happy about us signing Frizzell.

Peoria saying he is too old are a little misguided. He didn’t debut until 25 or something so he has fresh legs. Been the most constant player in the Sharks squad last two years only released due to the family request and Sharks picked up Lewis and heighington.

Jeremy is a absolute work horse he runs harder than most 20 year olds great pick up for the knights. The knights were lacking starch last season but with Jeremy there he will lead by example and push the rest of the forward pack up with him. In saying that very sad to see him go top bloke as well. But its up and up for the sharkies, I haven’t been this excited for the new season to start since the presto days bring on 2013 up up cronulla.

There is only one player I regret seeing leave the Dragons to go to Newcastle & that is McKinnon. They should’ve shunted Scott up there in the first place & kept McKinnon. He will be a great player.
Yeh. I am pissed of about us loosing McKinnon too. I said last year that I was more pissed off about loosing McKinnon than Boyde and I would have preferred to have kept him over Scott too.
You know when the rot started at the Dragons is when Doust signed Gasnier on that ridiculous 4 year deal and we had to let go, the cnr stone of our pack (Smith, Costigan). not to mention the Jnr talent.
Young forwards like De-belin would have thrived with experienced players like those around them , instead of getting bashed by more experienced packs.
Smith was still contracted to us for 11. He spoke to Bennett and Bennett, basically told him that he couldn’t say that he would be at Saints post 2011 and told him to look after himself. If Bennett cared about our future he would have been keeping the players that he wanted to keep and recruiting players for our future. But since Bennett has left that is when the rot has started and I have never seen anything like it at Saints in all of my time of following them since 79.
Yes we did win a comp, 2 minor premierships and a world club challenge under Bennett, but now Bennett is looking like the worst thing that ever happened to our club and he did recommend Price to Doust too.
I will keep reminding everyone how respectful he has been to Brisbane since he left. I would not be suprised if he goes back to coaches them in 4 years time.

Bellamy doesnt make great players out of nothing hes had 3 of the best players of this generation to build his team around and would be lost without them. Hasler that was years in the making and was finally performing under Dymock they did win quiet afew at the end of 2011. Des then brought in his staff and built on that. He did not make this team he put his touch on it.
Des hasler and craige have revoloutised there sides attack and defense . Turning NSW cup players INU and REYNOLDS into marquee backs , bennett has had the same tactics since brisbane , And thats why the two super coaches of the league are in the grand final and bennett is licking his wounds , as for this signing , bennett has been quoted calling jeremy injury prone.

I was saying years ago that Bennett had not proved anything coaching Brisbane. I did say that if I coached Brisbane for as long as Bennett coached Brisbane with the roster he always had at his disposal, I could have coached Brisbane to win 6 comps too, yeh I know some people laugh at that statement.
When Souths were celler dwellers and couldn’t buy a player, before Assotasi got there, I would say that if Bennett went to Souths and turned them around, without buying 9 or 10 rep players then he would have proved something.
Bennett on the other hand has had to deal with bad contracts from when Brian Smith was coaching in 2009. The Knights are a work in progress but he will get the right people in and build on the 2012 season. Newcastles has had a weak pack and poor depth to cover the rep season. Once Bennett has fixed that the Knights will be a top 8 team.

To me Beale is worthless, he is as good as signing no one. I don’t want him in our team what so ever. I would much prefer Morris at fullback, but he needs a decent pair of halves to run off, set him up and create room for him. I am alos interested in seeing if Evander Cummings develops into the top class player that some are saying that he will be. Cumming was named fullback of the year in the Toyota Cup this year and didn’t even play the whole season.
As for Signings. I am very disapointed with Doust and Craig Youngs results when it comes to rucruiting. We have to get rid of Doust, Young and Price as we currently have the 3 Stooges running our club or should I say ruining our club.

No team just wins a premiership they are years in the making. Hasler didnt turn the Dogs into winngers they have been recuiting, developing and letting the current team gel. They developed juniors in 2011 Barba, Kasiano, Jackson, Reynolds and recuits Tolman, Pritchard, Keating, Graham, Eastwood. at the end of 2011 under dymock they won 4 of there last 5. 2012 they got Graham and Hasler came in and brought all his well oiled staff from the premiership side. Hasler didnt revolutionise the team he finished the work that Greenburg started 2 years ago.

He never made the top 4 like michael maguire did this year and he only bought over the hill 32 year old matt king to souths from the esl so who is a better coach maguire i believe, bennett is unproven and has now been shown up as an ordinary coach because he ain’t coaching a jammed packed side of australian international players no more like he had at his disposal at the broncos.

Reality is I read your post about the dogs and the young guns developed including Josh Jackson. Jackson like Jake Finn actually came to the dogs from Newcastle Knights. Former Bulldogs recruitment boss now Knights recruitment boss MullHolland said Knights deemed Jackson to small for their inaugural NYC team now he is in the GF. Talk about irony
the knights should just sign the st george illawarra dragons 1st grade squad and split their games between newcastle and stgeorge/illawarra and call themselves the EAST COAST MERLINS

Funny How a couple of years changes peoples perspective. I remember all the dragons fans praising saint Benny and saying he was the best thing that happened to them. When they were winning Doust wasn’t even spoken about.

It’s a business these days people and because of the salary cap once you win one it’s a few years before you get another.
The only loyalty in the game is the fans. CEO’s, players and coaches come and go but the fans stick solid to their team. Deal with it we all will have our time to have to go through droughts and rebuilding phases
