Knights keen on unwanted prop
Wayne Bennett, who once told Justin Poore he wasn’t worth the money he was getting paid, is set to throw the former NSW State of Origin prop an NRL lifeline.
Bennett’s Newcastle Knights outfit is believed to have a two-year deal on the table for the 27-year-old front-rower – who was unwanted by Parramatta after three injury-plagued seasons with the club.
It was during Bennett’s reign with the St George Illawarra Dragons that Poore played for NSW in 2009, before he took up a big-money offer from the the Parramatta Eels which the Dragons failed to come close to rivalling.
It is claimed during those negotiations that Bennett told Poore’s then-manager Todd Buckingham that the reason the Dragons were not willing to match other offers was because he was already being paid `overs’.
But with the Knights lacking depth up front behind Kade Snowden and Willie Mason, Bennett is keen on adding some extra muscle to his roster and only a last-ditch offer from abroad stands in the way of the pair reuniting.
He’s probably got two years left in him so I hope Bennett can get some good work out of him. If not, you will hear all the cries of “Newcastle Retirement Home” all over this website.

Costigan Brisbane Canberra and left StG in 2010 a year before Bennett got to Newcastle. Smith has just come from Sharks not StG. Houston left StG after 07 two years before Bennett went to StG. Cuthbertson is a Manly jnr went to Cronulla for a year and StG for a year. Beau Scott is a west jnr that graded with Sharkies in 05 before going to StG in 07. As for Poore he was let go by StG when Parra offered him stupid money they were not willing to match and StG won the comp the after he left. And Poore lived in Perth till he was 18 hardly a Dragons junior

Easts correct me if I’m wrong but wasn’t there a story not to long ago on this site about the Knights possibly signing Waddell from the Raiders as a back up to Buderus. There have also been unconfirmed stories from the silent knight Barry Toohey that Joey johns is urging the knights two recruitment officer in keith onslow and Mullholland to throw the cheque book at the Bulldogs David Klemmer (not that I can see Klemmer leaving the dogs or cleal and hasler letting Klemmer slip through the cracks)
Who is David Klemmer?…sounds like a good prospect if what you are saying is correct.
Dr Dragon is it your opinion that David Klemmer the 2012 NYC player of the year and bulldog prop is a top prospect because joey johns is recommending the knights sign him.

No. The player that Bennett and Newcastle should be chasing is Jamie Coward. Bennett loves Coward and Coward loves Bennett. Everyone raves about how good Coward plays under Bennett, exept me. Now there is one player I would be happy for Bennett to sign.
I would not mind us signing Widdop, but I think we need a top halfback to partener Kyle Stanley at 5/8 and Widdop is a 5/8 too.

Dogs were winning games before Des arrived they finished just outside the 8. He just came in and finished off 3 years of recruiting and team gelling before he got there (Remember Brian Smith turned the Roosters around from wooden spooners in 2010 how did that turn out?) and Bellyache 5 straight losses without slater and he admitted he didnt know how to win. So Bellamy is useless without his big three as he showed by losing origin that many times with the best players available.
a good coach shouldn’t need to recruit so many players,a good coach works with what they have and makes minor additions,if a coach inherits a shit team that needs a major overhaul then fair enough….but bennett took over a roster with a fair bit of talent,his reputation is going down the drain if the knights don’t get it together this year….

Laney and you think the ageing forward pack that Bennett has put together will win your knights a GF. The side bennett has put together featuring a strong former SIG contingent doesnt appear to be about building for the future. Building a team for future is about signing quality players between the ages of 18-25 surrounding them with a few experienced players and developing and moulding that group of players. Surely the only club in the NRL with two recruitment officers in Mullholland and Onslow along with Bennett can sign better players than what they have signed especially in the forwards. Bennett has already shown this with the Bronco’s over the years

Matthew Wright, Michael Ennis, Josh Jackson, Anthony Quinn, Todd Lowrie, Greg Bird, Matthew White, Brad Tighe, Luke Walsh, Clint Newton (he doesn’t count), Dane Tilse, Boyd Cordner & John Morris. Not a bad list other then the few what plays at Penrith (there just rubbish)
@Desy, Bennett is recruiting players that will be of no use to Newcastle in another 4 years time when Bennett leaves and goes back to coach his beloved Brisbane again. Notice how he doens’t touoch any Brisbane players, exept for Boyd who Brisbane didn’t want and then Gagai who was saked for disiplinary reasons. I will bet that Boyd and Gagai will be playing for Brisbane in 4 years time with Bennett caoching them.
Bennett have no thought for Saints future and no respect for us after he left. The worse that Saints go after he left the better it makes him look and the same will apply to Newcastle. But he has been very respectful not Brisbane as to not poach any of their good up and comming players.

Why do dragon supporters highjack this forum every time a former player is signed elsewhere. Dragons cut Poore, and he hasn’t played for dragons for 3 years, he wasn’t even at the club when they won the premiership… And Laney, Smith wasn’t shown the door he was our best player – he asked for a release and we gave it to him, why keep a player who has a need to leave.
Smith had another year on his contract, he was contracted till 2011. Smith approached Bennett about his future at Saints. Bennett said that he couldn’t guarantee that he would be at Saints beyond 2011 and told Smith to look after himself. Cronulla made him an offer for 3 years and Smith was happy to take the 3 year contract, just as he has done again, with a year left on his contract with Cronulla. If Bennett had planned to continue to coach Saints and wanted to keep him, Smith would have stayed.
There are a lot of Saints fans on this forum, probably more that anyother club. So many have Saint or Dragon in their usernames too.

Bellamey 8 reps and 2 ex reps and Hasler at manly 5 rep splayers and 3 ex reps Hasler at Dogs 3 rep players and 3 ex reps. Bennett at the Knights 2 rep players and 5 ex reps. Abit plain but obviously Des and Craig are use more reps then bennett and they get results so why wouldnt Bennett recruit more players. Its a business and if you ask Hasler or Bellamy they will say that Bennett is the best coach in the game.
@Correction correction 2 current reps and 7 ex reps and FAILED to even make the 8, what a super poach. Then add B Scott and J Smith current reps and possible Poore ex rep and rumours of Weyman for 14 ex rep. That would add up to 13. Then add 2 future reps in McKinnon and Gagai. It would also make 8 ex Saints players. That is a lot isn’t it?

Now lets look at the top of the table. Ill right numbers of their current and ex- reps combined> Manly – 13 reps, Melbourne – 10 reps , Rabbitohs – 8 reps, Bulldogs – 9 reps. So the bottom of the ladder has the least amount of reps and ex reps and the top of the ladder has the most WOW mind blowing could at be that coaches need good players to win???

His record speaks for itself having coached at the top and succeeded even helping NZ beat AUS and yes if he ever helped NSW they would win too.. Being that good being that well respected by all he can’t help it if players want to play for him thats what makes him so valuable..! Though I will say this yes he has never poached players from the broncos which is weird considering their player nursery and I think coach’s like Bellamy, Hasler have caught up to him..! People that don’t rate Bennett very clearly have no clue about great coach’s..

We havent signed too many players this season and some fans when they see are teams signing up tallent tend to act like children – when one child gets something they want something. I for one am a Dragons fan who couldnt care too much about who Bennett signs. As previously stated by others the only blokes who were developed or “found” by the Saints and are now up playing for Knights are Scott, Houston, Naquama and McKinnon. And out of those the only one I am truly disappointed about losing is McKinnon, and the others well I think they are getting past it. I would prefer to sign on the younger tallent. Players move on. Fans have too realise this and get over it.

Or do they have a team of recruiters and skills coaches while they manage the team and make sure the players are prepared. No coach wins without good players and coaching staff. Bagging Bennett the most successful NRL coach ever just seems like you ignorant to what the games really about and dont understand how teams actually operate. it seems like you think coaches collect players like trading cards. When infact there is alot more to turning a group of players into a winning team and you need the right players to do that with.
