Expected to be announced as coach soon
The next New Zealand Warriors coach should be confirmed this week – but there is no sign of the “marquee coach” that CEO Wayne Scurrah suggested just six weeks ago, in the aftermath of Brian McClennan’s exit.
Former Melbourne and South Sydney forward David Kidwell will be appointed as the eighth coach of the Auckland franchise, with Matthew Elliott alongside him in a football manager role.
While both men impressed during the extended interview process, speculation linking the Warriors to Craig Bellamy indicates they weren’t the first-choice option.
It is believed that the Warriors still had hopes for the possibility of Craig Bellamy crossing the Tasman as late as last week but that door seems to be almost shut.
It had been hoped Bellamy might be ready for a new challenge after winning a grand final not tainted by the salary cap scandal.

I know that you have to start somewhere but the Warriors don’t need a rookie coach at the moment. They need a strong coach who can make hard decisions. The problem with the Warriors started when Maloney signed with the Chooks a year in advance. Things whent downhill from there.
I agree with you there. Matt Elliot I think though will be there but. His experience Is essential to there club. Mick potter would be a good match for them but they’ve obviously made up there minds already with kidwell. Good player is his day but honestly can’t see him being much chop as a coach
Seriously they said you want the best coach well go for the best coach they’ve already failed with a rookie coach go for Tim Sheen or Craig Bellamy!
I agree with all your comments.Matt Elliot shouldnt be there and i dont think that Kidwell has what it takes to be an NRL coach.
The Warriors say they want the best coaches and these 2 definitely aint.
Tim Sheens should be the man for the job and if he turns it down Mick Potter should be the coach if he applies for it
I can definitely see the Warriors going downhill if these 2 get put in charge
lol, i can only see them for a year then they should have a go for bellamy.
I can’t imagine many top quality coaches wanting to be involved with them other than fellow NZ’ers. They offered Flanagan double of what the sharks are currently paying. It’s not about money when you have to live overseas and it’s a bit isolated as well
There is no way Bellamy or sheens would go overseas when there are big offers from Sydney clubs. Why relocate overseas just for a bit more
We need a hard nose aussie coach to sort our boys out and we need to be more consistant bring in Bellamy or Sheens i say
warriors starting 17

As was shown by Canterbury’s ill fated Kevin Moore coach experiment a rookie coach is not the right rein to pull by the warriors after failing to live up to expectations. Should be looking at someone outside the box (say a mick potter or another experienced coach) someone who will shake things. Due respect to kidwell he appears to be a bandaid sollution to a long term problem
I think the Warriors are firmly intent on Bellamy. This just makes me think it is more real than I thought. Bellamy-Kidwell combination with Kidwell to take over the reigns into the future…Warriors need this to happen badly but will it?
I must admit the Warriors have talent to burn & 2 wealthy owners…they should be powerhouses without Bellamy. I bet they regret not throwing the bank at Cleary who was making good progress.
I would prefer John Ackland over both Tony Iro and David Kidwell.
He knows the Warriors well and look what he has done with the Junior Warriors.
I still reckon Sheens is the man for the jobi
I’m hearing it’s between storm and dragons for bellamys signature though I don’t believe saints will get him I would love for it to happen but it won’t
Richie Blackmore should have a crack.. He took the vulcans to a grand final in the nsw cup in 2011 when they hadnt even seen the top eight in their history. The majority of the warriors success in 2011 was because of the time some of the key players spent in training with richie and the vulcans, players were keen to praise his coaching practices. While yes Craig Bellamy is the best, the warriors need their own best and they can have this with one of their own Richie!
