Combo coaching gig
Signs point to a combination of veteran coach Matt Elliott and rookie David Kidwell at the New Zealand Warriors next season.
Elliott – the former Bradford Bulls, Canberra Raiders and Penrith Panthers coach – appears a natural fit for the general manager position. At the beginning of the recruitment process the club stipulated it would pursue a figure with considerable NRL experience.
Elliott, sacked by Penrith to make way for Ivan Cleary, is believed to have impressed during the extensive interview process the club has performed in Sydney over recent weeks.
An assistant to Craig Bellamy at the Storm, Kidwell has the advantage of having been immersed in the highly regarded Storm system as both a coach and player.

Neither of them should be coaches at the Warriors.Tim Sheens should be the man in charge of the Warriors.he is more experienced than the both of them
God no, not Matt Elliott.
Your kidding arent you? The obvious answer is DANIEL ANDERSON. Matt Elliot, Tim Sheens & Brian Smith are aged puppets and Kidwell will have the same effect Kearney did at the Eels.
WARRIORS GET DANIEL ANDERSON PLEASE
Kearney problem is that he did his own thing and didn’t take on anything Bellamy taught and that fact that Kidwell was also taught by Bennet and Kearney was a crap player should never have had a coaching position
it will be interesting if the Warriors take Anderson back.and the obvious answer is TIM SHEENS.
Anderson is an aged puppet
we want tim sheens
no way f**k. i want TIM SHEENS 4 the job.
Kidwell did a super job with rabbitohs Toyota cup team a couple of years ago and got them to a grand final.. However I think the warriors need not another rookie coach. In saying that only options available with NRL experience seem to be, Elliot, Smith, Sheens etc. If they want to start building and not looking for quick fixes, maybe Jason Taylor would be a good option as long as he has a couple of handy assistants featuring Kidwell and one other. Warriors need to build on their strength and that’s there juniors, but as long as they are willing to push through the next 18 months they will be a tremendous force again.
Bluey is not a rookie coach he is a Superleague coach not a NRL coach. The Warriors board should have done their homework before signing him.He is an awesome coach and will be missed
Matt elliot is not worth foodstamps if this is true bad times around corner for warriors.
DANIEL ANDERSON IS THE MAN.
WARRIORS NEED A DISCIPLINARIAN!
Ivan cleary- success finals and grand final
Daniel Anderson – success finals and grand final
Tony Kemp- dud
Mclennan- DUD!
Sheens- WILL BE A DUD
My god Elliott will destroy your club, Kidwell is not worth the risk. Go 4 Sheens or Anderson
If I was the Warriors, I’ll go with Daniel Anderson.
Noooooo ….. why are they even going through this process. Come on Warriors hierarchy – do you want to lose the fan base who have been awaiting the top level coach that has been hinted at since Bluey was chopped? No top level coach, Eden Park for home games in the future? What have we got to look forward to?
Anderson may have got them to the finals but did they win No.i would prefer Cleary over Anderson anyday.
SHEENS ALL DAY.
They should bring back kevin Campion as a forwards coach so he can put the mongrel back into the Warriors forward pack or even Wiki if Sheens got the job.i would prefer Wiki in there rather than Kidwell because Wiki has and will always have the respect from the younger players through the Warriors system
Ivan is with the Panthers now. Daniel Anderson is the best man for the job.
they clearly didnt win the comp with cleary either. Anderson got them to a number a minor premiership albeit because the dogs rorted the cap that year but he laid the foundation for coaches like cleary to shine at the warriors. before him they never even made the finals and look what he did with parramatta since hes left theyve gone from grand finalists to runners up for the spoon to wooden spoon. With anderson theyre theyd be able to get rid of mateo and then use that money to buy a forward like campion to PLAY not coach!!
Madness
Elliot worst coach ever – they must be kidding.
Its funny how so many have bagged ivan yet would have him back in an instant.
@Central coast panther
I was thinking the same thing. Oh well the Warriors lost, is the Panthers gain. Still I wouldn’t wish Matt Elliott on any team.
Matt elliot in truth had no support from the board or the training resources to succeed in the nrl. Having said that he was never a good fit for penrith as he tried to turn ad lib players into a structured side which failed miserably. Plus let the players take over the club and maintain poor fitness standards.
Elliot lacks the disciplinary skills to succeed at the warriors as anyone who coaches them has to wear the pants. Cleary acheived this by letting the warriors play with creativity whilst installing a solid work ethic and developing a top juniors base.
Warriors need a strong coach and another player mentor like k campion or s price.
True. That was the biggest issue and I believe that because the players had less control of things that is why Luke left and why there was rumours around about Michael and Lachlan wanting out.
Warriors need to sign an astute coach whose australian.
Then they need to get rid of feleti ” i have no respect for possession- here you take it” mateo and spend that 300-400k a yr and nathan “noones my” friend whose on about the same and throw the cheque book at players like josh reynolds, aiden tolman and even guys like liam fulton and michael crocker if they became available
Thats why hes a dud of a coach
your own words CCP
“Plus let the players take over the club and maintain poor fitness standards.”
if the warriors sign him – they are in for some dark times indeed
Has Graham Murray been sounded out? Did great things at the roosters and cows. ..
Hes part of the knights coaching staff
They can search for coach in england
Matt Elliot worst coach ever
@Bulldogs all the way
You can add Brian Smith to that list too.
Brian Smith would be at the top of the list of worst coaches ever. That is the only thing Brian Smith would be number 1 at.
are there any coaches that haven’t been mentioned yet… as much as i didn’t like what happened last time my money’s on Daniel Anderson.
Matt Elliott took the panthers from premiership contenders to spoon contenders, tim sheens has made the semi’s, i think, 3 times in something like 15 years, brian smith has been around for decades and has won what exactly?… the rest are all rookies (kidwell only retired 3 years ago) or have had limited success in the super league. At least Anderson has recent success with the eels and previously in the sl, plus he knows the club, and i don’t think any of the players who he coached, (and was rumoured to have fallen out with) are still there. (he coached mateo and lowrie at the eels, and leuluai in the exiles).
Maybe Anderson with Kidwell and Iro as assistants?
Steve folkes would be alright for the warriors a tough authoritarian aussie coach.
Have kidwell as assistant.
Aiden Tolman would be an awesome player mentor as Tjkovea said or another matt scott/ glen hall type of player.
The Pain Of Having Your Team Coached By Matthew Elliott
Penrith Panthers by League Freak
How could I describe the soul crushing exercise that is following a club coached by Matthew Elliott?
Let me put it this way…
I would quite happily watch Penrith get off to a win less start to the season, getting thrashed in every game, having no chance of making the finals and losing players to other clubs if it means that Matthew Elliott leaves the club at the end of the 2011 season.
Every single moment Matthew Elliott has anything to do with my club, I have no feeling of joy, happiness or love for the club I’ve followed since I was young robot.
Every win is one week longer I will have to put up with his Mr Magoo performances in press conferences, his simplistic game plan, his promises of improvement and the undying faith that Penriths management has in him.
I use to rubbish Matthew Elliott’s coaching ability back went he was in charge of Bradford. When it was announced that he was moving back to Australia to coach the Canberra Raiders, I felt nothing but sorrow for those that followed the Green Machine.
Predictably, Matthew Elliott destroyed anything positive about the Raiders. The Matthew Elliott game plan is to get his strength and conditioning mate from Bradford to bulk up the side, making them completely immobile. He then puts in place a simplistic game play which amounts to five hit ups and a kick.
If you look at the Raiders, there is the pre Matthew Elliott era, and the post Matthew Elliott era. The club is only just getting over Elliott’s time at the club.
As the Raiders settled into a cycle of mediocrity fans started leaving the club in droves. You see, at some point, football stops being fun when Matthew Elliott coaches your team.
Imagine the worst way you have felt as a fan. Now, imagine feeling that every single week. At some point, you just don’t want to feel like that any more, and you detach yourself from your team as an act of self preservation.
When it was announced that he would move to Penrith, I knew that someone upstairs must have decided to play a three year long joke on me. That was compounded when, with his job under threat and the club officially giving him 10 weeks to improve the team, he was signed to a three year contract extension a month later despite having a terrible start to the season!
The boring game plan just takes any enjoyment out of the game. A Matthew Elliott coached team never asks questions of the defense, they never have to make a decision on who to tackle because the game plan is so simplistic.
One thing you will see with Matthew Elliott coached sides is, their attack always comes from individual brilliance rather than coaching. Frank Pritchard putting a ridiculous pass on to a flying Michael Jennings.
Last season Penriths best attacking weapon was their kicking game. This is because they don’t have any attacking plays! They grind up field with hit ups, put the cross field kick in and from there its just down to the football gods to get the ball in the right hands.
The grind on your fanaticism only turns to more pain when you hear the statistics like Matthew Elliott has never beaten a Craig Bellemy coached side in 12 attempts or that he Matthew Elliott has never won a finals game in the National Rugby League.
All of this just wears the fan base down. It is there for everyone to see.
Last season Penrith hosted its first finals game in 6 years. Such an event should have seen a sellout crowd at the local supporters finally have its first winning season in forever. What happened instead was the worst attended finals game of 2010. In fact, they didn’t even attract enough to his the NRL’s regular season average crowd.
Penrith Panthers fans have detached themselves from the club. They just can’t take it any more.
So, as I head into 2011, I feel no excitement at all in regards to how my team will go. The best thing I can hope for it that Matthew Elliott wins another wooden spoon for the club and gets fired. That is the only highlight I can look forward to.
That is the pain of having your club coach by Matthew Elliott.
Your Bothered.
@Pete
That article was well written. Well said.
