No deal yet for Stewart
Brett Stewart’s contract situation with the Manly Sea Eagles remains in limbo, just six weeks out from the start of the NRL final series.
As coach Geoff Toovey on Tuesday admitted some surprise at the protracted nature of Stewart’s contract discussions – his current deal with Manly concludes at season’s end – and Glenn Stewart said he would like to continue playing alongside his brother, Sea Eagles prop Brent Kite revealed Stewart may opt to remain with Manly for considerably less money than he could get elsewhere.
Stewart has been linked to a possible move to the Sydney Roosters, St George Illawarra Dragons and even overseas.
It was reported as far back as May 1 that a new deal with the club was across the line but that is yet to come to fruition.

It amazes me how many players are linked to the dragons.. Why would any half decent player come to the dragons..? Not saying I wouldn’t take Brett or Glenn but again I ask why st.george..?
He is a player I do want, we should have signed him already and not bothered with Beale at all. If we could get B Stewart and Pearce and Play Kyle Stanley 5/8 we woud then have a top backline. Then we would just need to add couple of good forwards and we would have a team that would be tital contenders again. I would love us to get Brett and Glenn, like it was suggested late last year that we were going to make a package deal bid to get them both. Someone even told me last November that they would both be at Saints next year, but I am not getting my hopes up. I don’t have any faith in Doust or Craig Young to sign us any top players based on there track record.
I don’t think we need either of the Stewarts. They are both in the twilight of their careers and no doubt are great players but I don’t think we need to replace our aged stars with aging stars. Beale I think will give us exactly what we need at the back, and as you Kyle at 5/8 will be awesome. I also wouldnt be suprised if Cam King or Mitch Rein end up having a go in the Halves next year especially if what I hear about Jamie Soward is true. We need new young blood not guys who are in their late 20s.
Yes I can see your sentiments on buying ageing, but I do rate Brett Stewart one of the 3 best fuulbacks I have see no over 30 years of watching League, along with Slater and Inglis. Look at the difference he makes to Manly when he is there to when he is not there, It is compareable to the effect that A Johns used to have on Newy and Thurston has on Nth Qld. Manly can win the comp with him, but not without him. He will be 29 next year so I think he has got a good 4 years left in him, I would even like to get Glenn to who is a year older, but he is one of the best back rowers in the comp and players like the Stewart brothers would make a team a better one would be good fro the yunger players too.
Glenn is contracted to Manly until the end of 2014 and Brett is about to re-sign with Manly. BTW Brett is 27 not 28, he is definitely in the top 3 fullbacks of all time but his only downfall is he is injury prone but he is a freak and if not for his back to back knee injuries and two years out of the game he would be the No. 1 fullback.
I agree that he has some freakish skill and is no doubt one of the best FBs running around, but I reckon after seeing how G.Beale played last year at FB especially when we played the Broncs in the finals, I think he will be something special at FB his prefered position. I think the Broncs made the wrong choice for their FB and Beale was unlucky not to snare a fulltime gig back there for them. If the Saints were to go and splash out some of this money I am sure they have in the salary cap, I hope it is for a couple of hard working and ball playing forwards and if we can a HB that can create instead of just set plays.
What did you hear about Jamie Soward?
I heard that Jamie will be around for next year then off to england. Just a rumour.
Have heard that price and saints are looking at extending sowards contract at dragons..! If this happens that will do me

Cronulla sharks should be tossed in the mix,
Brissy red V, I hope you are right about Beale, because I don’t consider him any big deal whatsoever.
As for splashing money about, I will believe it when I see it. We have not made a major signing since the joint venture and I will go back to O’Conner and Rogers since we made a major signing, maybe Gouley from union too.
As for Soward the sooner we get rid of him the better. If Price has him in the side next year I predict that we will not make the 8 again and Price’s coching career will be over, never to coach first grade ever again, just as Soward’s rep career is over. He is a little scardy cat.
I wish Bennett took Soward with him to Newy.
Alot of people don’t rate Beale at the moment and to be honest I hadnt taken much notice until we signed then I started watching him and had a look at some of the stuff last year and he is good. In that game I metioned last year he clocked up 270m and a try assist and made some excellent plays and very few mistakes. I agree with your sentiment about Soward. He seems to only be able to put points on if the play is structured. He can be a very destructive runner but he does it so rarely. His long kicking game is excellent but as we have seen this year we are last for getting repeat sets and that comes down to his poor short kicking IMO. No wonder we cant sustain any pressure and score points. Kyle Stanley when fit will be excellent and would not be suprised if he can cement his spot in the halves be a future NSW and australian 5/8. He just needs to stay injury free and he will carve up. Its all a bit late for us this year but I am hopeful for next year. If Doust would just chase some talent to bolster our stocks
Yeh Soward looks good when the defence is shot to bits and he only likes to run when the opposition can’t lay a hand on him. I agree with what you said about him not putting grubbers in goal for repete sets, this is because you have to be close to the defensive line to put a grubber in goal and possibly even get hit just as or after you kick it and getting hit isn’t a part of Sowards game. The biggest problem is that he is too scared to go to the line and draw and commit defenders, so everything he does which is pass and kick is far enough away from the defensive line to make sure he can’t get hit even after he passes or kicks the ball, he won’t even throw a dummy and go himself, because if the defence doesn’t fall for it he will get hit.
I also have big wraps on Kyle Stanley and am hoping he could be a future NSW and Australian 5/8 too.
Yeh I agree that we have to make some major signings, I think we are 4 top signings away from having the best roster in the comp, but with the roster we have right now I don’t think we will make the 8 next year either.
There are many Saints fan who are not happy with our recruitment, our coach or Soward.
Oh yeh I like Vossy too.
When I hear Hadley commentating, it sounds like I am listening to the radio. I don’t mind Hadley either.
As a Penrith Supporter I hope he stays cause if the blues want to have any chance of betting the maroons is this guy. If his taken this long I think his resigned with many.
i really dont want stewart at roosters. he was a great player before he got injured but loss alot of speed after it. id rather james roberts, young and under the right coach he could become a weapon like his uncle
brissy red v and devout saint.. The first player saints should be looking at recruiting is a halfback with good vision and leadership skills then a specialist center and ball playing backrower.. All we would need to do is release all the dead wood ( hornby, cooper, fein, young, prior and co ) and third rate players we have recruited and actually recruit players that are worth while not players like ah mau, miller, vae, gower etc, etc.. Then we only need a coach , ceo and recruitment manager that know what their doing..!
I agree with whole heartedly that Doust, Young and Price have to be sacked. We have got the three stooges running our club. I don’t think they could be more incompitent if they tried.
I am also very P***** off with Bennett, I have never seen a coach of any club have such disregard for a club they were coaching from a future perspective. Yes we did win a comp under him, But the only players he brought to our club were Boyd, Costigan and Fien. He took Boyde with him, no that I care to much, Costigan was gone at the end of 10, no big deal either, but he added toughness to us and Fien is straight out s***. He then took McKinnon with him, that I am spewing about, I believe he will be one of our biggest loses ever and would have made a top second row pairing with DeBelin who I rate extreamly highly too. Bennett then got Scott who will be at Newy next year too and now I am hearing that Weyman will be there in 14. Bennett and Tinkerbell have also signed Gagi, Mason, Buederous,Tahu, Snowden and Cuthbertson and there is talk that J Smith will be there next year too.
When you said that will do me about resigning Soward, you did mean that will be the last straw didn’t you? If they resign Soward they will look even more incompitent than I even thought they already were. I did see Soward’s manager say that Craig Young was interested in resigning him and Danny Weilder said in his artiacle a week and a half ago that Saints were interested in resigning him too. If I was a fan of another club I would be laughing my head of, but can’t believe they could be so stupid, I am not the only one who can see that Soward is a Pussy, woose and coward, but why can’t the people that matter most not see it ia beyond me.
I can’t believe our recruitment could be so pathetic. I agree we need a top half, something that we have not had in the last 30 years. I agree we need a top backrower and I would like to see us get a top prop to go with Merrin. I don’t see Beale as the top fullback we need, I would have liked Morris to stay there if we can’t get anyone better, I think Morris would be a lot better if he had a top pair of halves to run off. As for Center, I think Chase will be very good and Green could be good too but I still want to see more of him, before I am convinced.
Soward is by far the most useless nrl player ever. He brings no attack, couldn’t defend if his life depended on it, has absolutely no vision, is a sook arse, has no ticker and takes up to about $300,000 of our cap money, for what I ask you..? Ah he has a good kicking game, pigs arse he does..!
ah we are definently on the same page then.
I am on a forum site called the V Bulliton, sign up if you like.
I got banned from the league unlimited forum after one day, falsely accused of being an alias of a former banned member. Because I was critisizing Coward, they couldn’t believe that I was a Saints fan and didn’t like Soward.
I have been on the V Bulliton forum for over 2 months now trying to show all the Saints fans that Soward is AFRAID and saying that he is the biggest reason our attack is the worst in the comp. So someone started a poll, should we keep Soward 100% or should we get rid of him 100% or undecided 100%. The poll is now 16 to keep him 100% and 1 to get rid of him 100% and 0 undecided, I am obviously the only one who wants to get rid of him????????? They refuse to see that he is our problem, some even think he is our best and most important player. lol
Devout saint, Cheers mate but I’m on too many forum sites as is.. In my opinion most the dragons fans on the league unlimited dragons site have no idea..! Most rate players like hornby, soward, cooper, fein, young, prior etc etc yet always ark up when linked to players like jennings, pearce, stewart boys.
What do you dragons fans think of putting Rein at half back? I read in his junior days he was a half back. He likes running at the line in attack and the dragons are missing a playmaker that does that. This will in turn give King a go at hooker. He seems wasted in NSW cup. Blood these young guys. This year is gone. They can’t do any worse than the oldies Hornby and Fien. I agree too many 3rd rate players were bought which aren’t being used. Although I am surprised Gower hasn’t had more of a go. He has been one of the best in the NSW cup.
Chopper, I think we have a great dummy half in rein as for halfback that’s a position of great importance that I think should be left to someone with vision, leadership and a great footy brain not that I don’t think rein has a great footy brain just not a no:7..!
I am very happy with Rein at hooker too, I think he has a very bright future at hooker. We also have King, who there are massive wraps on he too is a hooker that that played in the halves in his juniors, I think a lot of hookers played in the halves in their juniors. I have suggested giving King a run in the halves. I didn’t know that Rien had played in the halves in his juniors, but it doesn’t suprise me. It could be worth giveing one of them a go at half with Stanley at 5/8, if we don’t sign a good half, which we have not doen so yet.
Chopper sign up to the V Bulliton forum if you like.
agrodragon, I know what you mean about people on the forum rating those players and not wanting the likes of the Stewart Brothers and Pearce. I am unsure about Jennings, I don’t like the idea of spending 600 or the 700K that Jennings will be on next year and I would like to see how Jennings would go at fullback, there he would have more options and be able to turn up anywhere, he certainally has got a lot of tallent I will give him that.
Hi all Dragon fans having a look at all these comments have to agree we are all not happy one way or another how the 2012 season is going.
My own opinion from day one when they appointed Steve Price as coach that it was going to be a wrong descision ,yes he has been in the system for quite sometime with Brownie and more recent Bennett but i dont beleive keeping him at club would benefit the players which is on show in there performnces to date. The players i do beleive required a coach outside of the club that would give them a new vision and possibly a greater chance of attracting quality players to the club.
As for player retention i dont understand there policy they had Peter Doust on a talk back radio station the other week and commented they where not in the market for any marque players and would have trust in their juniors coming through.
It frustrates me that already this yr we have lost Beau Scott and Dean Young and we have a very ageing roster and players under performing from here i dont know where our team is headed.
